"Bridging Paths: Navigating Academic Surgical Careers"
Surgical Outcomes Club (SOC) members are invited to join a new initiative, Bridging Paths: Navigating Academic Surgical Careers, designed to explore the diverse pathways into academic surgery. In this 30-minute interactive online session, faculty members from a variety of specialties and research backgrounds will share their personal journeys to becoming academic surgeons. Participants will also have the opportunity to ask questions directly to the speakers.
Participants are encouraged to submit questions through the registration form. When available, session presentations will be shared on the members-only platform after the event.

Christopher Childers, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of HPB surgery at the University of Washington and Fred Hutch Cancer Center. He completed his general surgery residency at UCLA and a surgical oncology fellowship at MD Anderson. Specializing in pancreatic, liver, and biliary tract cancers, his research on healthcare finance and physician compensation has been published in top journals like JAMA and JCO, with funding from AHRQ.
Karen Woo, MD, PhD, is a Professor of Surgery at UCLA, specializing in vascular surgery. She treats patients in vascular surgery, wound care, and hyperbaric medicine, with expertise in dialysis vascular access for end-stage kidney disease. Dr. Woo also leads an NIH-funded research lab focused on improving dialysis access outcomes and patient experience. She has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and is a respected speaker at scientific conferences.
Rachel Greenup, MD, MPH, is a breast surgical oncologist at Yale and a robust health services researcher will kicked off the Mentorship Series. She is an R01-funded investigator whose work focuses on shared surgical decision-making for women with breast cancer and cancer-related financial toxicity.
